Good Governance

 

The concept of “governance” or “good governance” is not new, but rather the accumulation of cultural knowledge that a policy of living peacefully with one another is evident from the earliest days of human civilisation. ​

 

  • Good governance, therefore, offers integrated solution, alleviates all kind of conflict, and develops a sustainable society.​Major characteristics of good governance

 

  • The rule of law involves unbiased legal structures that are applied justly. It keeps them up to date, and makes them acceptable to every party. Simply put everyone is entitled in full equality to a fair and public hearing by an independent and impartial enforcement of laws.

 

  • ​Morality requires perseverance and belief to achieve righteousness and virtuousness. Various types of campaign help to instil better understanding of good social value. Major characteristics of morality are integrity, honesty, self-sacrifice, diligence, patience and discipline.

 

  • ​Transparency is to make information freely available and every party should be able to inspect its validation by improving system and mechanism in institutions to be more visible. This attribute will build trust with each other and help private and public sector’s work process a corruption free.​

 

  • Participation is the making of good governance that includes all key players in Thai society to acknowledge and take part in decision-making processes. Type of public participation can be classified as follows: public hearing, referendum, inquiry etc. Such public participation will eliminate monopoly power from either public or private sector.​

 

  • Accountability is a key requirement of good governance. Executives to public servants, political to senior officials must be attentive to their duties. They have to take full responsibility to any failure and be ready to improve promptly.​

 

  • Effectiveness and efficiency means that processes and institutions create outcomes that meet the needs of society while making the best use of resources at their disposal.
